Skin tag removal near SpaldingEvery one checked before it's removed.

Skin tags are harmless, but they snag on necklaces and rub under collars and bra straps. Alicia, a registered nurse, examines each one first. If it isn't a simple skin tag, she won't remove it. She'll tell you what she thinks and where to go instead.

Who it's for

Tags that get in the way

  • Tags that catch

On a necklace, a collar or a bra strap. Harmless, and still a perfectly good reason to have them off.

  • Neck and underarms

Where skin folds and rubs, which is where skin tags most often grow.

  • Eyelids

An awkward spot, and one Alicia treats once she has looked at the tag.

  • Tags you shave around

Where a razor catches them, so every shave means going round them.

  • Several at once

Several tags can usually be done in one visit. The price for each one after the first is confirmed before she starts.

  • Not something the NHS will do

Taking off a harmless skin tag counts as cosmetic, so the NHS doesn't usually fund it. The exceptions are in the box below.

We'll refer you instead of removing it if

  • it has an irregular or blurred border
  • it's more than one colour, or uneven in colour
  • it has changed recently in size, shape or colour, or itches or crusts
  • it bleeds
  • it's wider than about 6mm
  • it's a mole, because moles are never removed here for cosmetic reasons
  • you're under 18

Alicia will tell you what she thinks and send you to your GP, urgently if it needs it. And if a tag bleeds regularly, keeps getting infected, causes constant pain or gets in the way of your sight, see your GP first: those are the cases where the NHS in Lincolnshire may remove it.

How it works

From a phone call to a tag gone

  1. We call you

A short call, within one working day, to answer your questions and book you in with Alicia.

  2. Alicia looks first

She examines every tag before anything is removed.

  3. Or she refers you

Anything that isn't a simple skin tag stays where it is. She tells you what she thinks and where to go with it, urgently if it needs it.

  4. You know the price

From £50 for the first tag. The price for any others is confirmed before anything is removed.

  5. Removal

With advanced electrolysis or cautery, which treats the tag with heat from a fine probe, under local anaesthetic where needed. Most appointments take fifteen to thirty minutes.

  6. A scab for a few days

A small scab forms where each tag was. Leave it alone and let it come away by itself.

It usually heals with no visible mark. A small pale spot is possible, and on black or brown skin the mark can be darker instead.

Before you decide

What we will and won't do

  • We look before we touch. Nothing is removed without being examined first.
  • If it isn't a simple skin tag, we won't remove it.
  • Moles go to your GP, not under our probe.
  • A tag that's been removed doesn't usually grow back. New ones can still appear, especially as you get older.

Would 100% recommend! Alicia took the time to talk to me about what I needed and was honest and kind, which is what you need when considering these kind of treatments. Alicia took the time to check in following treatments and put any worries I had to rest throughout the process.

Questions

Straight answers

What if it isn't a skin tag?

Then it isn't removed. Anything with an irregular border, uneven colour, recent change, bleeding, or a size above about 6mm is referred rather than treated. Some skin cancers can look like a harmless lump to an untrained eye, which is why nothing is removed without being examined first.

Can you remove a mole?

Not for cosmetic reasons. Removing a mole with heat destroys it, so nothing is left to send to a lab. If it was an early skin cancer, the chance to find out is gone. Your GP can look at it and arrange for it to be cut out and tested if it needs to be. Alicia will happily look at it and tell you what she thinks.

Does it hurt?

Skin tags don't usually hurt in themselves. Removal is done under local anaesthetic where needed, and Alicia talks you through it before she starts.

How many can you remove in one go?

Usually several. Most appointments take fifteen to thirty minutes, and tags in the same area can generally be done together. The first is from £50, and the price for the rest is confirmed before anything is removed.

Will it leave a mark?

Usually not. A small scab forms for a few days and should be left alone. A small pale spot is possible, and on black or brown skin the mark can be darker than the skin around it.

Will it come back?

A tag that's been removed doesn't usually grow back. New ones can still appear elsewhere, which is common as people get older.

Can you do one on my eyelid?

Yes, eyelids are one of the areas Alicia treats. She looks at the tag first, and if it's one she wouldn't remove here, she'll say so and tell you where to go instead.

Why won't the NHS remove it?

Because taking off a harmless skin tag counts as cosmetic. In Lincolnshire the NHS may remove one that bleeds regularly, keeps getting infected, causes constant pain or affects your sight. If that sounds like yours, ask your GP before you book anything.

Can I do it myself at home?

The NHS advises against it unless a GP has recommended it, because of the risk of infection, bleeding and scarring. It also skips the step that matters most: someone checking that it really is a skin tag.

Who will remove mine?

Alicia Marsland, a registered nurse with seventeen years in clinical practice. She examines and removes every skin tag herself.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Skin tag removal here is for adults aged 18 and over.
